Mission:
Episode Nine: Too greedy and too deep
Location: En-route to Deep Space Nine
Timeline: Stardate 93813.6
The Cychreides has been paroling the Rolor nebula region for several days now. Captain Mae has been called to Deep Space Nine for command briefing and has taken lieutenant Syvian with her.
We were to have a quiet few days and I'm sure that had it been otherwise, doctor Selren would have insisted that I step down and have a few days rest.
But no rest for the wicked.
At 07:48, just as we were about to start our first shift, ensign Visone brought us the new of the incident.
An explosion at a small Duranium mining operation in the Manek asteroid belt, mostly depleted by now.
The information was that the whole asteroid belt was collapsing and the chance to find survivors was reducing every minute. And we were the nearest ship.
So, the course was plotted, medical facilities and trauma teams prepared and the Runner outfitted for an away mission.
Lt. Commander Zus was the obvious choice to lead it, for her experience with tactical situations and as I was acting captain.
The doctor's expertise with the science station and as the first medical response on the field made put her on the list as well. And I needed the nest Ops specialist I had in there, so Mr. Visone was picked as well.
I must commend the professionalism and bravery of those officers, as the mission was executed in a timely fashion, the identification and response to the trapped survivors was superb, the first aid given by the doctor made sure we lost none of the survives that were rescued from the wreckage and all the adaptions to the transporter system made in such a way that enabled the Cychreides to beam out many miners at a time and through the asteroid field.
Last and not the least, the bravery displayed by Lt. Commander Zus in evacuating all the crew from the damaged Runner and staying until the last moment, to give the trapped miners as much time to be rescued as possible.
The bottom line, out of the sixty-three survivors we were able to find, fifty-five were brought to safety. The total population of this station was over one hundred.
We did what we could and did it well, I think.
I recommended the following crew members for the following awards:
Lt. Commander Uzeeta Zus - Alliance Medal
Lieutenant Urr Selren - Meritorious Service Medal
Ensign Mario Visone - Alliance Commendation Ribbon
I've also put a requisition for a new Runabout.
