… the download of the facility data-banks was completed, so only one task remained”.
Captain Miller leaned back in his chair.
He felt like his chair is made of red-hot iron and he couldn’t bring himself to continue his log.
So much death crossed my path, so much death on my hands…
He looked at his hands, not fully aware that he’s doing so.
He had no real choice in the secluded and fortified facility deep within the Lilsis system.
Doctor Dion’s analysis was clear – the process cannot be reversed.
Very few of those that have not completed the transformation, turning them into bio-dilithium hybrids, survived the halting of the process.
The Captain leaned forward, placing his elbows on the table before him and his head between them and closing his eyes.
“Sir, the demolition team needs your permission to set the timer going”, Chief Arev’s voice had a playful undertone to it, a quality quite alien to the usually dead serious enhanced Vulcan.
“And we need to leave, before a horde of dilithium rich Cardassians will come asking questions”, the doctor’s expression was grim, yet her voice soft.
He looked at the bodies littering the floor around him and then straight into the eyes of the Chief.
A mutant that was allowed to live, yet hates this privilege. A person, different as she might be.
Why can't he grant the dilithium hybrids the same boon?
"It won't be really living", the doctor laid a hand on his shoulder, "they will be suffering from excruciating pain every moment of it. And if it won't drive them insane and into uncontrollable rage, they would die within months. Their metabolism is grinding them into dust".
Miller stepped back and let her hand fall.
He gave one nod to Kara and said, "One more thing to live with, somehow".
Then with a decisive tone, "Prepare to beam out".
His bridge was a bustle of activity, when he stepped from the turbolift.
Commander Na’Toth was issuing orders at the speed of light, with her voice of steel.
A vessel, escaping the destruction of the Facility, could be seen clearly on the viewscreen and the Cychreides was close in pursuit.
And gaining.
“The ship is hailing us, Commander”, Chief Arev was already at her station, that unexplained and uncharacteristic smile on her lips.
“On screen, Chief.”, Miller said before his XO had the chance to replay.
Commander Na’Toth jumped up from the Captain’s chair, stretching into an attention, while Kara nodded and executed her order.
“Thank you, Number One.”, The Captain made his way to his chair and gestured for the XO to take her seat beside him.
The screen blinked and switched from the blackness of space into the grayness of a Cardassian style bridge.
However, the figure that filled the screen was decked in a uniform of a Starfleet Admiral.
“You are to power down your weapons and engines and prepare to be boarded, you hear?”, the Admiral practically screamed.
Miller looked at the image for a long moment, then his expression changed to a crooked smile.
“No, Admiral Blackwell, it is you that ought to power down your systems.”, he replied, “However you won’t, won’t you?”
The big-bodied Admiral grew red in the face, as red as a Betazoid can get.
“And what would you do, eh?” he taunted, “You are a good for nothing spineless up-start of an engineer! You will regret this, when I will lay my hands on you!”
Miller’s smile grew even more crooked. He turned to Ensign Uzesu, at the tactical station and asked, “Are we within weapon range?”
The ensign nodded. “Well within, sir”
The Captain turned back to the screen.
“Here’s something that I will not regret, SIR. Three quantum torpedoes, maximum yield.”
