XO's Log,
I don't know where to begin. Perhaps it best that I state my gratitude towards Captain Miller and his First Officer for the rescue of myself and fellow prisoners... at the unfortunate cost of said First Officer's life, to whom I will honour for the rest of my long days.
It was... difficult in that Jem'Hadar prison camp. I've been a POW before, but this one was different. We weren't at war and the prisoners where considered lost at sea. No one knew we were here, and so no one knew what we suffered. No one ever will. It was unlike anything I experienced before. And so I am grateful to my rescuers.
And now... I find myself in the position as the ship's Executive Officer. Captain Miller offered me the position because of my experience and knowledge, and because it will take everyone to get this ship home. I accepted for two reasons. First... is to honour my... predecessor, she died rescuing me and so I am honour bound to ensure her crew is well taken cared of and returned home safely. To that end I will make it so, even if it costs my own life as well. My second reason.. is that it would have been illogical to refuse, I am in the position to help and I should.
And the captain wasted no time putting me to work, and work is good. Helps me focus. First is this duty rosters... it'll be on the captain's desk soon. I looked over what my predecessor organized and I found no fault in it, so I kept it as a baseline as I shifted a few key personnel around so that they may make better use of their talents and offer them opportunities to expand themselves. I also kept the original outline because I maybe the XO, this is not my ship, not my crew. I am the outsider, I can see it in the eyes of half of those I walk by, hell I even see a glimpse of it in the eyes of the captain. By keeping it to what my predecessor had, I avoid disrupting them further and to show I'm not here to make changes, just here to ensure they get home safe. After that, I doubt the captain will keep me on. He's seen my record, he'll have reasons why.
My second, more important task is fleshing out the plan to loose the Jem'hadar chasing us. At the moment we're keep pace, but they do not tired, they will hound us until we run out of fuel or tire ourselves out. I've read up a lot on old Earth military strategies, especially their submarine warfare. Interesting topic and still holds lessons important to space combat. For the old submarines to avoid detection or shake off someone chasing them, they would cross the thermal layer in the water, which acted sort of like a sound wall at a certain depth of the oceans, sound waves usually bounced off of them. So while the submarine looses their pursuers, it is only a matter of time until the one chasing them crosses the layer as well and find them again. So what they would do is as soon as they cross a layer, they launch a decoy, it's basically a torpedo designed the mimic the sound of a submarine, on their original course while the submarine itself cuts all speed and rigs for silent running and change their own heading away. The vessel chasing them would cross the thermal layer, pick up the decoy and chase it, driving past their actual prey without knowing they were there.
So, my plan is similar to this. We will find a nebula that will mask our signature, once inside we cut all speeds and go dark. As we do so, we will launch our fastest probe that has been modified to emit our unique warp signature along our original course. The Jem'Hadar will detect it leaving the nebula and give chase. We will remain hidden until enough time has passed for us to sneak out and away on a different vector. All without using the cloaking system. I have heard that the system is affect by... irregularities, and it's unpredictable nature leaves too much room for error for this plan. To execute this plan, all departments will be working together. Intel and science department will find a suitable nebula. Tactical and Engineering will find a suitable probe and modify it for launch. I will also require all departments to assist each other in rigging the ship for silent running for when the time comes. This seems simple in theory, but I foresee this taking time. As soon as the Captain gives the go ahead, I will put it into action.
I will leave the plan details and the duty roster on his desk. I hope this works.
I may not be what the crew want, nor truly accepted as one of them, but I will do my hardest regardless to ensure the safety of crew and ship. As the klingon defense force would say, "I serves the captain, but I stand for the crew." No truer words to live by.
